 Castellabate is a characteristic ancient village overlooking the more ancient and famous seaside hamlets of San Marco and Santa Maria. ts name is derived from the “abbot’s castle”, built at the beginning of XII century by San Costabile Gentilcore, fourth abbot of Cava dei Tirreni’s Santissima Trinità Abbey, to defend the coast inhabitants. The castle, the symbol of the city, became property of Cava’s Abbey again only in XX century. |
